Legacy modernization & rescue

Legacy application modernization, without the risky rewrite

We take over a fragile or aging application, make it safe to change, and modernize it step by step while the business keeps running.

Most legacy applications still do their job. The trouble is everything around that: very few people understand the code, every release feels risky, the framework or hosting is out of date, and nobody is sure what would happen if it broke on a Friday afternoon.

We take over software like this, including software we didn't write and that has little documentation. First we make it safe: backups, monitoring, repeatable releases and tests around the parts that matter. Then we modernize it in small slices, so the business keeps running and you see progress every few weeks instead of waiting for a rewrite that may never land.

What you get

What we build and deliver

Take-over and audit

We read the code, map the system and its risks, and write down what it does, what it depends on and what is most likely to fail.

Stabilization and a safety net

Backups you have tested, monitoring and alerts, repeatable deployments and tests around the critical paths, so changes stop being scary.

Modernization in slices

We replace or upgrade one part at a time, behind the scenes, so the business never has to stop and each step delivers value on its own.

Upgrades and cloud migration

Framework and language upgrades, move from aging servers to the cloud, and a plan for security patches and end-of-life software.

The process

From first call to handover

  1. 01

    Assess

A short, fixed-fee review of the code, infrastructure and risks, with a plain-language report.

  2. 02

    Stabilize

Backups, monitoring, releases and tests, so the system is safe to touch.

  3. 03

    Modernize

Step-by-step improvements in priority order, each one released and measured.

  4. 04

    Hand over or keep running

Documentation and a walkthrough, or ongoing support under a monthly plan.

Questions

Legacy modernization & rescue: common questions

Should we rewrite it or modernize it?

Usually modernize. Full rewrites are expensive and risky, because the old system holds years of business rules nobody has written down. Sometimes a rewrite is the right call, and our assessment tells you which, with the reasons and the cost of each route.

Can you take over software someone else built, with little or no documentation?

Yes, this is the most common starting point. We read the code, talk to the people who use it, and document what we find as we go, so you end up with better documentation than you started with.

What if the original developer has left?

That is exactly the situation we're built for. We rebuild the knowledge the system needs, so you no longer depend on any one person, including us.

Will the system have to go offline?

Not as a rule. We plan changes in small releases, test them first and keep a way back, so the business keeps running. If a short outage is unavoidable we agree the timing with you in advance.

How long does modernization take?

It depends on size and risk. Stabilization usually takes weeks, and modernization is delivered in increments over months. After the assessment you get a realistic plan with milestones.
